Historical Background

Davy Crockett is best known as a fearless American frontiersman who died at the Battle of the Alamo with his friend, Jim Bowie, when they refused to surrender to overwhelming odds. He was also a congressman for limited government and a member of the Freemason Society. He was involved in a number of battles over the course of his life, and is known for wearing an iconic 'coon-skin hat.

"I'm that same David Crockett, fresh from the backwoods, half-horse, half-alligator, a little touched with the snapping turtle; can wade the Mississippi, leap the Ohio, ride upon a streak of lightning, and slip without a scratch down a honey locust [tree]."

"Always be sure you are right, then go ahead."
