Investigating into the murderous Dorset Monster, Doctor Christopher Fenn, with the aid of Wendy, uses the "Devil's Catalog" to summon three ghosts of Roman soldiers to combat the beast. One of the ghosts remains unidentifed, whereas Antonius is the leader of the others. The third soldier is named Claudius.
Fenn surmises the beast was anciently invoked by Druids to fight the Romans. Being of supernatural origin the same as the monster, they handily dispatch of the creature. Immediately following, they turn on Fenn and Wendy. Quick-thinking Fenn distracts the ghosts by demanding the pair be given sanctuary in a Roman camp until they have had a trial. The Romans quickly confer, convicting Fenn and Wendy, sentencing them to immediate death. The time it took the Roman ghosts to confer gave Christopher enough time to consult the Devil's Catalog and banish them.
