Gurtil was the commander of a Martian war fleet who wanted to conquer Earth. He hated the peaceful Azurian scientists of Mars, and wanted Earth's resources, as Mars was becoming uninhabitable. He attempted to hold Earth hostage with a demonstration of the capabilities of his nuclear weapons but, was defeated by John Hunter.
