Lorenzo is a character from William Shakespeare's comedy The Merchant of Venice (first published in 1600, but known to have been written and performed before 1598).
Origin[]
Lorenzo is a Venetian Christian and a friend of Antonio, Bassanio, Gratiano, Salarino and Salanio. Most notably, though, he falls in love with Jessica, daughter of the loan shark Shylock, and helps her escape from her father's house along with Gratiano and Salarino, taking lots of money and precious objects. After that they elope to Belmont and get married. The marriage also converts her to Christianity.
