Kees Van Ruyters was an artist who lived in the 15th century. He was known for his horrific depictions of monstrous creatures before his suicide in 1495. Van Ruyters killed himself by thrusting his arms under the wheels of a moving oxcart. This caused him to lose his hands and die from the wounds.

The Ghoul hires foremost expert and re-creator of Van Ruyters' art, Betty Saunders. Betty goes to Belgium to work on the job, but is visited by The Ghoul, who reveals his plans to have Betty paint new artwork in the style of Van Ruyters. The purpose is to create new monstrous servants to do The Ghoul's evil bidding.

The ghost of Van Ruyters reveals itself to Betty. Since lost his hands and cannot effectively paint, he has her create a portrait of The Ghoul. This portrait destroys The Ghoul and its minions.
