Golden Age Origin

Miss Betty was a woman in late-1800s Colorado who disguised herself as a headless ghostly cowboy. With her horse, Black Beauty, she fought crime in the Wild West.

Before becoming the Headless Horseman, she was a school teacher frustrated by the rampant crime in the Wild West and decided to do something about it. Thus, she made a particularly tall and broad shirt and put herself inside it. She could see through the gap in the shirt but, it appeared to everyone else that the rider was headless.

In her second published adventure, she dealt with Alex Trush, owner of the Bar-X Ranch, and his gang, creating a fake Headless Horseman straw dummy to frame the hero for their crimes. However, the real Headless Horseman successfully trapped the wanted men for the Sheriff; to whom they confessed their crimes once they are caught.

Notes

  • Some sites are reporting her real name as Betty Paige Warren. Her second appearance does not use this name, merely referring to her as "Miss Betty" however, her first appearance (as of this writing - March 2015) cannot be found online and thus, can't be confirmed one way or the other as to whether or not the Paige & Warren names were confirmed there. It's possible those names were newly created by a fan (and, thus, under copyright) but, it's also possible they are authentic. Until confirmation can be made, any usage of them in new work would have to be at own risk!
