Jane Barlow was a reporter for the Daily Citizen, a newspaper later inherited by her fiancé, Blane Whitney. Jane and Blane were together for a long time, before she became disenchanted with his flamboyant play-boy life style cover story and became interested in the adventures of the super-hero, the Wizard. Jane was completely unaware they were, in fact, one and the same. They later reconciled and married.

Golden Age Appearances

  • Top-Notch Comics #1, 4-5, 7-8, 10-13, 15-25, 27
  • Shield-Wizard Comics #8

  • Starring the Wizard and the Shield, Jane's appearance in Top-Notch Comics #5 (May 1940) was the first crossover storyline in American comic books, narrowly beating out the more famous Sub-Mariner/Human Torch crossover in Marvel Mystery Comics #8-9 (June-July 1940).
  • It is not known whether the Jane that appeared in Top-Notch Comics was, in fact, Jane Barlow. That Jane had red hair with no last name mentioned. Later appearances of blonde Jane Barlow have no mention of the aforementioned appearance ever taking place but, Blane and Jane know each other so... they must have met somewhere?. Also, it's important to note that female characters changing hair color at random and poor continuity were staples of Golden Age comics so, who knows?
