Jiraiya (literally "Young Thunder"), also known as Ogata Shuma Hiroyuki, was the protagonist of the Japanese folktale The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya. He was a ninja skilled in shapeshifting magic and could morph into a gigantic toad. He was the heir of a powerful clan in Kyūshū of the same name.
Jiraiya fell in love and married Tsunade, a beautiful maiden snail magic master. His nemesis was his one-time follower Yashagorō, later known as Orochimaru, who had mastered snake magic.
