"Karmud, Master of the planet Marduk, where evil is our motto!"

The "weird planet Marduk" is one of the many planets beyond the orbit of Pluto. Some of these planets are used to as "stepping stones to outer space!" Marduk is considered a "jinx planet", and is thus avoided. Spaceliners mysteriously experiennce "gyrometer" failures around Marduk, and being drawn by its pull. The Lunex Luna is pulled into Marduk, but Captain Larq manages to send an S.O.S. signal to the Space Rangers.

Commodore Rex Clive and Adjutant Speed Lansing respond immediately. When Clive expresses his plan to land on Marduk, Lansing replies, "But you can't land on Marduk! Scientists have proven that the planet's total weight is less than that of water... So it must be composed of ice and thinly packed snow. We'll bury ourselves, Rex..."

When Rex lands the Space Officer Command Ship on the surface of Marduk, Lansing is pleased to acknowledge the scientists were wrong.

Returning to space, Rex and Speed examine the planet from afar to seek out the missing space liners. They follow as the Staritania is pulled into Marduk, finding the planet is a hollow world, with a 5,000-mile empty core. Floating at the center is a vast, artificial globe. The missing spaceliners are parked around it on a platform-ring surrounding the globe. The globe is controlled by Karmud. It's central gyroscope maintains its position. At full power, as Karmud tells them, it also can "stop all gyrometers on all spacecraft within a million miles!"
