Origin

Miss Cuttenclip used to live near the palace of Glinda the Good. She made such pretty paper dolls, that the sorceress gave her some magic paper; anything she cut from it would be alive.

Since her creations were rather flimsy, Glinda settled her in a remote location and built a wall to keep out the breezes. There she has built a large community of paper dolls, with cardboard houses, paper trees and flowers, and even a paper pump that produces paper water.

Appearance and Demeanor

Miss Cuttenclip is dainty and pretty, about the same age as Dorothy Gale. She has golden blonde hair and turquoise blue eyes, rosy cheeks and lovely white teeth. She wears a simple white lawn dress with a pink and white checked apron.

She lives in the only wooden house in the village of Cuttenclips. Her sitting room is littered with all sorts of paper of all colors. She has several scissors of various sizes, and a good supply of paints and brushes.

The Cuttenclips

The Cuttenclips are a community of living paper dolls in the Quadling Country of the Land of Oz.

They live in a circular enclosure surrounded by a high wall painted blue with pink ornaments. It never rains in the area, since Glinda keeps the storms away. There is a small door in the wall with a gold-lettered sign which reads:

  • VISITORS are requested to MOVE SLOWLY and CAREFULLY, and to avoid COUGHING or making any BREEZE or DRAUGHT

Miss Cuttenclip is the little girl who creates all the Cuttenclips and is acknowledged as their Queen. The paper people have their own paper flag, and a song entitled "The Flag of Our Native Land".

The paper dolls are nearly all the same height, but are cut into various shapes. The girls wear beautiful costumes made of tissue paper. Their names are Polly, Sue, Betty, and such things.

The Cuttenclips are protected by paper soldiers connected together in a line, with brightly painted uniforms and paper guns.

The houses are made of cardboard and painted in various colors. Their yards are decorated with beds of paper flowers, and some have paper vines twined over the porches. Paper trees line the main path through Cuttenclips. A paper pump near the street provides paper water.

Miss Cuttenclip's house is made of wood and has real flowers in the garden and real trees beside it. It is the only solid thing in the entire village.
