Opar is an ancient city that was once a colony of Atlantis, built in a high valley among great mountains in Africa. It was essentially a seasonal home for the Atlantean aristocracy, but maintained a staff of guards and maintenance personnel at other times. Eventually Opar learned that Atlantis had sunk into the sea, and it continued on as its own civilization. After thousands of years, the population of Opar became greatly diminished, until there was little more than a single tribe left in the great city (the population was at least one hundred, probably several hundred). Inbreeding and interbreeding with apes denigrated the genetic stock of the once perfect Atlanteans, causing the men to become hideous, hairy and beast-like, with short, crooked legs, long arms and close set eyes. The women for some reason, remained beautiful. Most, if not all citizens of Opar were white skinned. They generally wore animal skins and necklaces of teeth and claws. The women wore gold head dresses. The inhabitants worship the Flaming God of Opar (the sun), and are commanded by a hierarchy of priests and priestesses.

The city itself was massive, with tall towers, gold domes and miarettes, and surrounded by a huge 50 foot wall. However, much of it was crumbling, and overgrown with vines and jungle vegetation. The interior had concrete floors, well worn stairs, heavy wooden doors and a maze of narrow, winding, snake-like passages. There are carvings of strange looking people and various birds and animals. The walls were inlaid with golden ornaments and tablets, often displaying ancient hieroglyphics. Opar had, at one point, been a depository for the treasures of Atlantis, and there are massive hidden vaults of gold, diamonds and jewels there, which the inhabitants wear liberally.

In the film Tarzan the Tiger, Opar is depicted with a lot of sun imagery.

In the early 20th Century, the city was rule by Queen La and visited numerous time by the hero, Tarzan.
