Para Bruin is a rubber bear that once lived on the Isle of Mifkets.

He is a large, fat, brown bear. Instead of being furry, his skin is smooth and shiny. He is made entirely of the finest Para rubber, including his teeth and claws, which makes him completely harmless. He can bounce to great heights like a rubber ball, and enjoys performing this feat for an audience, being quite proud of his ability.

He had lived for as long as he could remember on the Isle of Mifkets. At one time, all the creatures feared him, but once the Mifkets discovered his harmlessness they defied him. When Jacquelin and her parents were shipwrecked there, Para Bruin befriended the girl and did his best to protect her.

After the Fairy Beavers helped Jacquelin and her parents escape the island, Para Bruin realized that Mifket Island would be a dreary place without her. He joined John Dough and Chick the Cherub when they left the island, and the three were carried by Flamingo to nearby Pirate Island and then to Hiland and Loland, where he became John Dough's adviser.

John Dough, Chick, and Para Bruin later visited the Emerald City in the Land of Oz as guests of Princess Ozma in honor of her birthday.
